Braces for Kids: What Parents Should Expect in Greensboro

Learn about orthodontics for kids in our latest blog

One common dental milestone for kids that many parents face is the need for braces. If you're currently or able to navigate this process, here's what you can expect when considering braces for your child.

Understanding the Need for Braces

Children may need braces
for various reasons, including crooked teeth, overlapping teeth, or a misaligned bite. It's essential to visit a pediatric dentist or orthodontist to assess your child's dental health and determine the best course of action. Early intervention can often prevent more severe issues later on, so don't hesitate to schedule a consultation if you have concerns.

The Initial Consultation

Your journey will typically begin with an initial consultation. During this consultation, the orthodontist will:

  • Examine your child's teeth, jaw, and mouth.
  • Take X-rays and possibly make impressions of your child's teeth.
  • Discuss the findings and recommend a treatment plan if braces are necessary.

This consultation is a great time to ask questions and understand the expected timeline and costs involved.

Types of Braces

There are several types of braces available today, each with its benefits and considerations:

  • Metal Braces: These have traditionally been the most common option and are highly effective. Today's metal braces are smaller and more comfortable than in the past.
  • Ceramic Braces: These work similarly to metal braces but are less noticeable because they blend with the teeth.
  • Lingual Braces: These are placed on the inside of the teeth, making them invisible from the outside.
  • Invisalign: Clear aligners that are removable and virtually invisible. They are a popular choice for less severe orthodontic issues.

Your orthodontist will recommend the best option based on your child's specific needs and lifestyle.

The Treatment Process

Once you decide on the type of braces, the orthodontist will schedule an appointment to place them. Here’s what the process generally involves:

  • Placement: The orthodontist will clean and dry your child's teeth, then attach the brackets using a special adhesive.
  • Adjustment Period: It's normal for your child to experience some discomfort or soreness for the first few days. Over-the-counter pain relief and soft foods can help.
  • Regular Adjustments: Every 4-8 weeks, you’ll need to visit the orthodontist for adjustments. These visits ensure that the braces are working correctly and that the teeth are moving as planned.

Expected Duration

The length of time your child will need to wear braces varies depending on the severity of the misalignment and the type of braces used. On average, orthodontic treatment can last from 18 months to three years. Your orthodontist will provide a more precise timeline based on your child’s unique needs.

Life with Braces

Adjusting to life with braces involves a few lifestyle changes:

  • Diet: Certain foods should be avoided, including sticky candies, hard foods, and gum, as they can damage the braces.
  • Activities: If your child plays sports, a mouthguard is essential to protect their teeth and braces.
  • Discomfort: Occasional discomfort is normal, especially after adjustments. Wax can help prevent irritation from brackets and wires.

Post-Braces Care

Once the braces come off, your child will likely need to wear a retainer to maintain the new position of their teeth. The orthodontist will provide instructions on how often and for how long the retainer should be worn.
